The Parlour Jewellery-Diamond Grading

Posted on March 20, 2010 Posted in: Blog

The four C’s of diamond grading are clarity, colour, cut and carat weight.  Clarity – Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), VVS (very very small inclusions VVS1, VVS2),  VS ( very small inclusions VS1, VS2), SI (small inclusions SI1, SI2) and I grade (pique I1, I2, I3).  Colour- colour ranges from D to Z (colourless blue white to yellow).  Cut – Ideal, very good, good, medium, fair and irregular.

Although commonly thought to refer to the actual size of a diamond, a carat is actually a standard unit of measure that defines the weight of a diamond. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams. Carat sizes are also expressed as “points”, with a one carat diamond equaling 100 points, a one-half carat diamond being 50 points, a three-quarter carat diamond being 75 points, and so on.
